Laxer Syrup contains Lactulose 10gm per 15ml, a synthetic disaccharide used primarily as an osmotic laxative. It is indicated for the treatment of chronic constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. Lactulose works by metabolizing in the colon into low molecular weight organic acids, which increase osmotic pressure and promote water retention in the bowel, thereby softening stools and facilitating bowel movements. Additionally, in hepatic encephalopathy, Lactulose reduces blood ammonia levels by acidifying the colon contents, which converts ammonia (NH3) into ammonium (NH4+), reducing its absorption and systemic toxicity. Laxer Syrup is administered orally, with dosage tailored according to the severity of constipation or encephalopathy, typically ranging from 15 to 45 ml daily in divided doses. It is generally well-tolerated, though mild gastrointestinal side effects such as bloating, flatulence, and abdominal discomfort may occur initially. Caution is advised in patients with galactosemia or those requiring electrolyte monitoring due to potential imbalances. Laxer Syrup should be used under medical supervision, especially in pediatric and elderly populations. It is contraindicated in cases of intestinal obstruction or hypersensitivity to Lactulose.
