Ritonavir acts as a pharmacokinetic enhancer by inhibiting cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), thereby increasing plasma concentrations of Lopinavir, a protease inhibitor that prevents viral replication by inhibiting the HIV-1 protease enzyme. This combination improves antiretroviral efficacy and helps in achieving sustained viral suppression. Hivus-LR is typically prescribed as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) for treatment-naïve or treatment-experienced patients with HIV-1 infection.
