Metfo 500 Tablet contains Metformin hydrochloride 500 mg, an oral antihyperglycemic agent used primarily in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Metformin belongs to the biguanide class and functions by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. It is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults and pediatric patients with type 2 diabetes. Metfo 500 is typically prescribed when diet, exercise, and weight reduction alone have not resulted in adequate glycemic control. It may be used as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic agents, including insulin. The medication is generally well tolerated, with the most common adverse effects being gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and a metallic taste. These effects are usually transient and can be minimized by gradual dose escalation and administration with meals. Metfo 500 should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment, hepatic dysfunction, or conditions predisposing to hypoxia or lactic acidosis. Regular monitoring of renal function and glycemic status is recommended during therapy. Metfo 500 does not cause hypoglycemia when used alone.
