Megamentin 625 Tablet is a combination antibiotic formulation containing Amoxycillin 500 mg and Clavulanic Acid 125 mg. Amoxycillin, a broad-spectrum penicillin derivative, exerts bactericidal activity by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic Acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor, enhances the efficacy of Amoxycillin by preventing enzymatic degradation of the antibiotic by beta-lactamase-producing bacteria. This synergistic combination is effective against a wide range of aerobic and anaerobic Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. Megamentin 625 is indicated for the treatment of various infections including respiratory tract infections (such as sinusitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, otitis media, and dental infections. It is also used in the management of mixed infections where beta-lactamase-producing organisms are suspected. The dosage and duration of therapy should be individualized based on the severity of infection, patient age, renal function, and clinical response. Common adverse effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, as well as hypersensitivity reactions in susceptible individuals. Caution is advised in patients with a history of penicillin allergy.
