Levetiracetam acts by modulating synaptic neurotransmitter release through binding to the synaptic vesicle protein SV2A, thereby stabilizing neuronal activity and preventing seizure propagation. The extended-release formulation allows for once-daily dosing, improving patient compliance and maintaining steady plasma concentrations. Levipil XR is typically prescribed as adjunctive therapy but may also be used as monotherapy depending on clinical judgment. Common adverse effects include somnolence, dizziness, headache, and fatigue, which are generally mild to moderate and tend to diminish over time. Caution is advised in patients with renal impairment, and dose adjustments may be necessary. It is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to Levetiracetam or any excipients.
