Tinidazole, a nitroimidazole derivative, is effective against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa by disrupting DNA synthesis through the formation of toxic intermediates. This synergistic combination provides broad-spectrum activity against mixed infections, including genitourinary tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, and certain sexually transmitted infections such as bacterial vaginosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and amoebiasis.
