K-Pio-M Tablet ER is a combination oral antidiabetic medication containing Pioglitazone 15 mg and Metformin 500 mg in an extended-release formulation. It is indicated for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in patients who are inadequately controlled on diet and exercise alone. Pioglitazone, a thiazolidinedione, improves insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ), thereby enhancing glucose uptake and utilization. Metformin, a biguanide, primarily acts by decreasing hepatic glucose production and improving peripheral glucose uptake, contributing to better glycemic control. The extended-release formulation allows for once-daily dosing, improving patient compliance and minimizing gastrointestinal side effects commonly associated with immediate-release metformin. K-Pio-M Tablet ER is to be used as part of a comprehensive diabetes management plan, including diet, exercise, and regular monitoring of blood glucose levels. It is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment, acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, and hypersensitivity to its components. Common adverse effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances, weight gain, edema, and a risk of hypoglycemia when used with other antidiabetic agents.
