Glimepiride, a sulfonylurea, stimulates pancreatic beta cells to increase insulin secretion, thereby reducing blood glucose levels. Metformin, a biguanide, primarily decreases hepatic glucose production and enhances peripheral insulin sensitivity, contributing to improved glucose uptake and utilization.
