Glimepiride, a sulfonylurea class drug, functions by stimulating pancreatic beta cells to increase insulin secretion, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. Metformin, a biguanide, primarily acts by decreasing hepatic glucose production and improving peripheral insulin sensitivity, enhancing glucose uptake by muscle tissues.
