Empagliflozin, a selective sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, reduces renal glucose reabsorption, promoting urinary glucose excretion and thereby lowering blood glucose levels. Sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, enhances the incretin system by preventing the degradation of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), resulting in increased insulin secretion and decreased glucagon release in a glucose-dependent manner. The combination of these two agents provides complementary mechanisms to improve glycemic control in patients inadequately controlled by diet and exercise alone or those on monotherapy. Xenia ST 25 is typically administered once daily, with or without food.
