Mirena Intrauterine Delivery System (IUD) is a hormone-releasing, intrauterine system used for contraception and treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding. The device contains 52mg of levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin, which is slowly released over a period of three years. The system is placed in the uterus by a healthcare provider and can remain in place for up to three years. Mirena IUD is effective in preventing pregnancy, with a failure rate of less than 1% over the first year of use and less than 0.1% over the second and third years. Additionally, Mirena has been shown to significantly reduce menstrual blood loss, with 78% of users experiencing a significant decrease in bleeding after one year of use. The most common adverse reactions associated with Mirena IUD include back pain, headache, and breast tenderness. Mirena IUD is recommended for women who have a normal menstrual period and are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
