About This Medicine
Product description & overview
Jolltrim-DS Tablet is a combination antibiotic formulation containing Sulfamethoxazole 800 mg and Trimethoprim 160 mg, designed for the treatment of various bacterial infections. Sulfamethoxazole, a sulfonamide antibiotic, inhibits bacterial synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), while Trimethoprim selectively inhibits bacterial dihydrofolate reductase, resulting in a synergistic bactericidal effect. This dual mechanism effectively impedes folic acid metabolism, essential for bacterial DNA synthesis and replication. Jolltrim-DS is commonly indicated for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis, acute otitis media, and certain gastrointestinal infections including traveler's diarrhea. It is also employed in the treatment and prophylaxis of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia in immunocompromised patients. The tablet should be administered orally, with dosage and duration determined by the severity and type of infection, as well as patient-specific factors. Caution is advised in patients with hypersensitivity to sulfonamides, renal or hepatic impairment, and in those with a history of blood dyscrasias. Common adverse effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances, hypersensitivity reactions, and hematologic abnormalities. Jolltrim-DS should be used under medical supervision with appropriate monitoring to ensure efficacy and minimize resistance development.
